Stage Curtains

Georgia Stage, Inc. manufactures stage curtains for the smallest school or church up to the largest civic center or auditorium. All curtains are sewn in-house by our experienced seamstress team.

Stage curtains can be made out of a wide range of theatrical fabrics and can be finished several different ways. Some things to consider when deciding fabric and finish is the layout of the stage and the function of the curtain.

Curtain Finishes

Top Finishes
The Standard top finish of flat drapery has webbing double stitched with grommets 12" on center. Black grommets are used on black fabric, and brass grommets are used on fabric of color. Our standard top finishes available are:
Webbing Grommets & Ties
Standard top finish; 3.5" Jute webbing with #4 Grommets 12" O.C.; supplied with 36" tie line. Allows drape to be hung from a dead hung pipe or fly system batten.
Webbing Grommets &
S-Hooks

Standard top finish 3.5" Jute webbing, with #4 Grommets 12" O.C.; supplied with 2" zinc plated s-hook. Allows drape to be hung from track or rod.
Hidden Webbing Grommets & Ties Line
Standard top finish often referred to as "Blind Grommets," which enables the masking of the batten from which the drape is hanging.
Sewn Ties
Standard top finish often referred to as "Blind Ties," which enables the masking of the batten from which the drape is hanging. Sometimes preferred over "Blind Grommets" for lighter weight draperies.
Blind Sewn Snaps
Used for masking, and for easier attachment to traveler tracks; designed to easily clip on and off standard track carriers.
Sewn Snaps
Used for easier attachment to traveler tracks and cable; designed to easily clip on and off standard track carriers.
Fullness
Curtains can be sewn flat (0% fullness) with panels of fabric sewn edge to edge, or sewn gathered (with fullness). Pleating gives the curtain depth and allows the curtain to absorb more light. Pleating options are:
Flat
Drape is sewn flat with no additional fullness added
50% Fullness
4" box pleats 12" O.C. with 50% extra fabric added to desired width dimension.
75% Fullness
4" box pleats 9" O.C. with 75% extra fabric added to desired width dimension.
100% Fullness
6" box pleats 6" O.C. with 100% extra fabric added to desired width dimension.
Pinch Pleats
Pinch pleats are best used on light to medium weight fabrics with at least 100% fullness.
Bottom Finishes
The standard bottom hem is 3" or 6" with either weight tape or a chain pocket inside. If a pipe pocket is desired, one of three methods is used: 1) standard 6" pocket, 2) 6" pocket with an inner canvas pocket or, 3) 6" pocket with a 6" flap in front of the pocket.
Standard Flat Hem
Standard flat bottom hem, usually 3" or 6"; usually supplied with weight tape or a chain pocket.
Pipe Pocket with Hem or Flap
Separate pipe pocket behind hem; face fabric on front acts as a light seal.
Line Pipe Pocket / Hem
Face fabric is folded over to make pocket, and the pocket is lined with canvas to insure durability and strength.
Side Hems
Off stage side hems are traditionally 2" with a small tuck. On stage side hems are referred to as turn backs. These turn backs vary in size from 12" to 1/2 width, to 1 full width of fabric.
Lining
Most curtains can be lined if desired; however typically you will find that main curtains and valances are lined to give the drapery a finished look. Lining also protects the curtain from damage caused by moving scenery and other objects which may snag the fabric. Linings can be either permanently sewn onto the main curtain, or be removable with hook and loop. Typically cotton fabrics are lined with denim lining or ranger lining, while IFR fabrics are lined with a polyester.
Side Hems
2" standard finish on most drapes for the off stage side and the standard finish for most cyc's and scrims.
Lining Fabric
Added to drapes to give protection and a finished look to the back of the drapes and usually attached with twill tape.

Lining

Different fabrics can be used for lining different curtains. It depends on what fabric the curtain is made with and the location of the curtains. For cotton stage curtains a simple Ranger lining will work just fine. For poly stage curtains the equivalent to denim is Avora. For curtains going into windows, Passfoam should be the fabric of choice. Passfoam is a 100% opaque fabric that will protect the curtain from UV. If you are not sure if you curtains need lining or which lining you should use, contact our sales staff.
